The tenth John Smith Invitation 4’s day was held on Sunday May 20th at BBC. Under glorious blue skies and in perfect conditions the 3 x 9 end competition was duly fought out amidst plenty of banter and cut and thrust bowls. Tight right through to the last few ends eventually Darcy Lawler’s team won through to take the main prize. It was a terrific day and thanks must go to Bruce Battin and Richie Semmens for the excellent BBQ breakfast, Alex and his staff who put on a superb lunch in The new Darling Kitchen, Andrew and the BBC bar staff and Terry Thurtell who has organised the John Smith Day for the full ten years. In thoughtful short addresses both Terry and President Ross Craig remembered our friend John Smith who sadly passed away earlier this year and who’s name will always be associated with this special day. Typical of the long and fascinating history of the oldest bowling club still operating in NSW (est in 1880) – between John Smith and his father Fred (Mr. Balmain) Smith they were members of the club for over 120 years! We look forward to inviting a full 14 teams for the 2019 John Smith Invitation 4’s.
