Who would have thought that the first working automatic dishwasher was a wooden tub with a wire basket in it. It should be no surprise that it was invented by a woman too! Josephine Garis invented the first automatic dishwasher in 1889. Her dishwasher had a handle that when turned, hot soapy water cleaned the dishes. Though that invention occurred 9 years after the Balmain Bowling Club was formed, it wasn’t until almost 40 years later, in the 1920’s, that woman were permitted to play the ancient sport of bowls.
