Who Would Have Thought – Panama Canal

Panama Canal being built

The idea of creating a water passage across the isthmus of Panama to link the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans dates back to the 1500s, but it wasn’t until the 1st January 1881, one year after the Balmain Bowling Club was formed that construction commenced.  Thirty two and a half years later in October 1913, the Panama Canal was opened.  On September 4th 2010, the Chinese Freighter Fortune Plum, was the 1,000,000 vessel to pass through the canal.  That’s about the same number of bowling balls bowled on Balmain Bowling Clubs greens, each and every year!
