In 1868,

whilst holidaying in Australia, His Royal Highness Prince Alfred was the victim of an assassination attempt at a picnic in Clontarf.  Horrified that such an attempt could happen on our shores, Australians opened a public subscription fund to build a hospital as a memorial to his safe recovery.  That hospital is of course, ‘Royal Prince Alfred Hospital’.  The hospital opened in 1882, two years after the Balmain Bowling Club was formed.  Who would have thought the Balmain Bowling Club is older than the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.  Balmain Bowling Club, the home of Australia’s oldest lawn bowling green!
