Congratulations to the men’s Grade 4 Pennants for reaching the Zone 13 bowls finals.  The playoffs were to commence on Saturday, 11 June 2016, at Taren Point Bowling Club.  However, “Old Mother Nature” decided to hit Sydney with the worst storm in many years.  This resulted in the greens becoming swimming pools and all bowls games postponed for two weeks.
Arriving at Taren Point Bowling Club on Saturday, 25 June 2016, it was a brisk 7 degrees with a severe wind chill factor.  As we know “Balmain Boys Don’t Cry” and Game 1 got underway against Grandviews a much more fancied bowls team.

Balmain displayed great skill and slowly wore down their opponents.  After a short break they played a semi-final against Roselands, another more fancied team.  Balmain continued their fierce competitiveness without any High Fives, Back Slapping or Yahooing relying on their skills to do the talking.  With the 2nd win there were whispers around the greens: “Balmain won again, who are these guys?”
Sunday morning and the temperature was again a single figure, cold!  While confident Balmain was to play their nemesis Earlwood Bardwell Park a Club they had not beaten in the 2 Pennant rounds played during the season.  Unfortunately, their performances of the previous day were not replicated.  Balmain got off to a poor start and never recovered.  Although disappointed they displayed utmost respect for Earlwood Bardwell Park’s players, congratulating them and wishing them good luck in the grand final against Caringbah; the eventual winners of the Zone 13 Finals.
After a team photo and the players appreciated the kudos from other players for their “David V Goliath” achievements and promised to repeat their efforts in 2017.  IMG_0857
Balmain’s team consisted of the following players: Steve Smith, Dave Mara, Craig Stephens, Brad Donaldson, Des Gray, Richie Semmens, Steve McIlroy, Darcy Lawler, Tim Waygood, Terry Thurtell, Matty Hearne, Mark Stephens.
